The Weekend Special!

Happy Friday, friends! Hope you didn’t have any BBQs or seawall strolls in your plans…because there’s rain the forecast this weekend and I’m not sure when the sun’s supposed to come back. Then again…this is Vancouver…the forecast cannot be accurately predicted more than two hours in advance (or so my Atmospheric Science prof taught me at UBC…and don’t even bother asking why I took ATSC because I’m not sure why I did it).

I don’t mean to be all gloomy and grey on you, so now that I’ve slapped you in the face with the meteorological reality, I’ll provide some fun suggestions for how you can spend your wet and wild weekend safely indoors!

1) Watch a fashionable movie! Perhaps a classic like Breakfast at Tiffany’s or the always-stylish Devil Wears Prada.

2) Throw an impromptu dance party with your besties! Don’t forget to have alcoholic beverages on hand to fuel your freaky moves.

3) Have a spa-inspired beauty day! Anyone for a face mask or an at-home mani/pedi?

4) Try on wigs. Why the heck not?

5) Plan a ridiculous random BFF road trip! The PTSC endorses dune buggy rides on the Oregon coast!

And if the sun does come out to play (and I hope that it does!), get out and enjoy it because there is nothing more beautiful than our Vancity in the sun!

Much love, Madison Blake

PS What are your rainy weekend activities of choice? I also love catching up on my fave blogs, online shopping, and tackling a DIY project or two.

Red Carpet Special: Leighton Meester Part 2

Oh, Leighton Meester. You made me work hard for this one. Scrolling through endless pages of red carpet events, trying to find five fabulous looks to feature, it was as though Meester spent a good portion of her earlier Gossip Girl days dressing the exact opposite of Blair Waldorf so people would be clear that she was not Queen B on her days off. Well, Leighton, I’m convinced! This would’ve been a whole lot easier if we were just showcasing Blair’s best…but here are five looks from Leighton Meester that I absolutely love (for part 1 with Megan’s picks, click here).

2008 Teen Choice Awards in Lanvin

I love this fresh-faced and understated Leighton! This dress makes a strong case for Kelly green being the only colour that olive skinned brunettes ever wear; the shade is stunning on Meester, and the draping is perfectly executed.  I even love the skinny belt which gives a flattering fit at the waist. Paired with classic black peep toed pumps, Meester looks like a young woman ready to take on Hollywood!

2009 MTV Movie Awards in Emilio de la Morena

Here’s the anti-Blair sort of look I was referring to, but in this case I don’t hate it! Meester has an “edgy” red carpet uniform of sorts, consisting of a questionable mini-dress anchored with some sort of heavy looking shoe.  That recipe can quickly bake up a dozen hot mess cupcakes, but for this occasion it somehow turned out as perfection pie! Uhh…I guess I have baking on the brain…? Anyway…her face looks flawless, her body looks amazing, and the purple suede booties are fun and young. I am loving it.

The Roommate premiere, 2011, in Michael Kors

We’ve got the cut-outs again in this look, but it’s a much more classy take on things with this floor length Michael Kors. Considering she’s at a premiere for a movie in which she plays some sort of psycho roommate predator, I think this is a perfect choice, don’t you? She’s got a sort of dangerous/sexy thing going on with the black leather and pin straight center parted hair. Hotness!

2011 Golden Globe Awards in Burberry Prorsum

Okay, first things first…that shoe!!! I want it!  It is somehow able to simultaneously stand out and steal the spotlight while blending in perfectly to compliment the romantic long-sleeved gown. Meester avoids any schoolmarm comparisons by rocking a scandalous slit, and wins my heart with this atypical red carpet choice.

Christian Dior Spring 2012 Presentation in Christian Dior

I suppose this isn’t technically a red carpet event…more of a cobblestone sidewalk, actually…but it’s at Paris Fashion Week, so I deemed it acceptable! This is some sort of dream look for me, from the ruffles to the tiered skirt to the patent Mary Janes, and there’s something so French (read: chic) about the black and white combo Meester’s got going on. The structured bag with a silver chain strip is an unexpectedly hard accent to this sweet feminine look, perfectly appropriate for Leighton’s style.

And that wraps up our two part red carpet recap of Leighton Meester!  It’s incredible timing, really, considering she is performing tonight at The Vogue with Check in the Dark.  Aaand you can still get tickets for like $25. I can’t go, but you should! And then report back to me on what she was wearing.

Much love, Madison Blake

Red Carpet Special: Leighton Meester

It’s that time again! Every month we have ourselves a little red carpet style party and this month we’re showcasing The Queen B herself my girl crush Leighton Meester. Not only is she the only reason I watch Gossip Girl, but she’s also a red carpet risk-taker and never afraid to try something new, no matter what the globe-sweeping trends are. All things that get me a little giddy inside.

Now I’m not saying Leighton’s red carpet choices are all perfection all the time, but I’m not holding that against her. She’s still a relatively new-kid on the red carpet style block and girl is figuring out her style as she goes. In taking risks and going a little wild is when the ultimate fashion moment happens. So for the few flubs along the way, I still celebrate Leighton as someone who’s way exciting on the fashion front and a refreshing lady to look forward to at all the events. Never a bore and always making a statement. So today we’ve got some of my fav looks and tomorrow MB will bring things home with hers!

Versus

I love this for a sort of edgier LBD moment. The high-neck balances out the mini but gives it a dose of classy meets sexy, while the leather inserts give it that rocker-chic edge that sets it apart from the standard black mini. I love the two tones and pleating on the sides, which bring in a softer feminine element. And the shoes? I. Die. Classic pumps be gone! The mininal jewels don’t distract from the extra-special detailing on the dress and shoes, while her bouncy waves and smokey eye makeup stay on theme with the rocker vibe.

Okay so before I say anything, I have to say I am not loving the eye makeup. Something seems to have gone strangely awry and she’s not looking quite as gorgey as she does normally. However, I included this because I am certifiably obsessed with the outfit. I love the monochromatic colour-scheme paired with the metallic clutch. And the dress itself is gorgeous beyond words. The feathering, sequins, bow-tied waist and chiffon detailing give it a very feminine and almost fairytale feel, while the solid platform balances out the softness of the look.

Marc Jacobs

This is one of those moments that I praise the red carpet fashion gods for someone like Meister. This Marc Jacobs dress is SO incredible and definitely not something many ladies would have the courage to wear. I die that Leighton did. I was obsessed with this on the runway and so glad that it made a real-world apperance. The swept-back hair works great with the heavily-detailed shoulder and her very soft makeup keeps her skin glowing and gorgey. This is a serious high-fashion moment and an extremely polarizing look. For as much love as I’m giving it, someone else will be hating on it … Hard. I love that I can count on Leighton to step away from the red carpet standard and bring us something more avant garde like this.

Missoni

Well I mean. It’s Grecian, it’s accented in gold … I’m obsessed. Obviously. The gold hardware outlining the dress gives a much-needed contrast to the very neutral palette and Leighton’s vintage statement-making jewels give this a Grecian throwback feel in a modern day fashion world. Super glamorous and effortless all at the same time. Love.

To me, this is Leighton’s version of a modern-day pin-up. The dress itself with it’s hallucination-inducing stripes, bows, and peplum is so ridiculously fun and a perfect party-dress choice for a youthful event such as the Teen Choice awards. The fit is incredibly flaterring, which is further showcased via Leighton’s pulled-up hair. The patent red heels are an obvious choice to amp up the fun factor and bring in the vintage-y feel. Leighton’s bronzed skin, simple makeup (but bright lip!) and minimal jewelry are the perfect backdrop to the busy but super cool outfit.

So there we are! A few of my favourite non-Blair looks from Leighton Meester! Which are your favs?? Remember to check back tomorrow for MB’s picks, as per usual. I’m sure this game will showcase starkly different sides to our style star as we generally choose very different looks. Way fun!

Stay stylish, xxMegan West

Stylish Saturday!

Well kids, it’s that time again! Here’s a looksie at some of our personal style from the week. And no … this colour scheme was not planned. But how fun, riiiight? Generally speaking, MB and I are on opposite ends of colour spectrum, but this week we’ve come together for a pink day worthy of approval from the queen herself, Regina George.

Here’s my girl Madison Blake looking tres chic out and about in a mix of colours and textures. I’m loving the super feminine pinks and girly bow contrasted with the edgier looking bag and tortoise-shell watch.

Wearing: Joe Fresh skirt, George (as in Wal-Mart George) top, & Naughty Monkey shoes

Vintage purse, Michael Kors watch, H&M belt.

And here I am in my version of pink at my friend Christine’s place (previously spotted on this Weekend Special) in what was my apres-work enjoy the sunshine outfit. AKA. a bright maxi, granny-chic sweater (I still catch a chill until the weather hits about 25…) and giant wedges. And my latest obsession of pink hair.

Wearing: H&M cardi, Unknown dress (seriously, no idea where I bought it & no tags exist …), Nordstrom teen-section purse (purchased in Denver) Aldo platform wedges, Unknown necklace, Rachel Zoe snake cuff, assorted bangles from Aldo & the like.

What are YOU rocking this week?! Let us know! We’d love to feature your style.

Have a wild one! xxMegan West

The Weekend Special!

So remember how last week how I was all rambling on and on (complete with photographic evidence!) about how we’re all ready for summer … praising the sunshine days, hollering to bring on the maxi’s and open-toe wedges? Well apparently the universe revoked such privileges, because just as quick as we were busting out the lounge chairs and shelving our self-tanners the universe pulled a major “just trickin”  and brought on the Tsunami central.

But don’t fret my little nuggets! If you make like me and invest in a high-quality, professional grade sunless tanner you can beat the rainy day blues by having yourself a gorgeous tan all year long! See, if you lather it on morning, noon, and night, 7 days a week, you can achieve a bronzed and glowing look no matter what the weather. The key here is to establish that very natural golden glow… just like me! Because orange is so not chic…

Isn’t that gorgeous?! Alright, alright you caught me! This has been another case of wtflip happened to my face?!” MB snapped this with her iPhone during the Mary Katrantzou event and I came out looking like a flaming orange Oompa Loompa! Good for a slightly horrified/highly amused chuckle. And of course, Weekend Special handed to us on a silver platter … yet again. Hopefully this gave your Friday a touch of the hilarity. And/or a brief chuckle. At the expense of my neon-orange face, of course!

Have a great weekend … and make use of those instagram filters! Unless of course you want your own turn rocking Oompa Loompa chic?

Stay stylish, xxMegan West
