The Beauty Blow-Up: Sun Smarts
I’m optimistic, so I’m going to publish this post despite the erratic weather; intended as a “now that the sun is shining every day, you best be wearing your sunblock!” kind of thing, I’m now writing to you in the spirit of luring out the sun and reminding you all that sun safety is important even when the clouds loom.
During the sunny months, it’s especially important to protect your beautiful face from the harmful UV rays. “But why,” you may ask, “would I worry about facial sun protection when I can just get Botox and fillers (or eat the souls of beautiful young girls) in a few years to keep my youthful glow? Why take preventative measures now?” Now hear this! I have seen the latent effects of years of sun damage, and it is not pretty. I’m not just talking wrinkles: I work in the cancer treatment world and skin cancer can get pretty ugly. I don’t want to see that happen to you, my beautiful friends, so listen up and read on for my favourite face-based sunscreens!

I’ve deemed this the best of the drugstore set. It is lightweight and non-greasy, plus it boasts a broad range of SPFs in case you want to take it to the max (upwards of SPF 70). It is waterproof, won’t clog pores, is PABA free, protects against UVA and UVB rays, and has something called Helioplex (which apparently makes UV rays bounce off your face at 90 degree angles…or something…). Bonus: it’s got antioxidants to protect from pollutants, too. It’s relatively cheap and you can pick it up at your local drugstore, grocery store, et cetera. Good deal!

I use this Clinique sunscreen in all seasons because it’s so light and sheer I barely notice it’s there. It feels like a primer, so it’s perfect for daily use under makeup and is safe to reapply throughout the day without totally ruining your face. It takes care of UVA and UVB rays, and like all Clinique products it’s scent-free, PABA free, and appropriate for sensitive skin. If you want to take it up a notch, there is an SPF 40 available as well. It’s less than $20 for a tube, so it won’t break the bank, either. But, really…a healthy and wrinkle-free future is priceless, isn’t it?
All right friends, get out there and slather your faces with sunblock! I promise if I get wind that you are going SPF-free this summer, I will post photos of skin cancer that will put the fear in you.
Much love, Madison Blake
PS You know I only threaten because I love, right?
PPS What’s your favourite facial sunblock? Do you rely on your makeup to get your SPF? If so, it might be a good idea to add a sunscreen to your routine in the summer months because the protection you get from makeup isn’t enough, according to experts.
