The Beauty Blow-Up: Oscars 2014

I think last week I mentioned that I’d be featuring the best of Fall/Winter 2014 Fashion Month’s runway beauty, but I had forgotten that the Oscars were coming. So, in lieu of runway beauty, we’re going to quickly talk Oscars (for an Oscars fashion recap, check out this post). Here are some of the ladies who best brought the beauty on the Oscars red carpet this year:

Kate Hudson - Goldie’s daughter could do no wrong on Oscar night. Her inspiring Versace gown was complimented by the most perfect smoky eye, a subtle hint of pink on the lip, and vintage-inspired hair that stylist Chris McMillan called “Veronia Lake meets Jerry Hall.”

Sandra Bullock - Also showcasing an impeccable smoky eye was Sandra Bullock, pairing hers with an understated nude lip and glossy side swept curls. Her complexion is amazing, too – that blush is the absolute perfect shade for this look. Just like her dress, it’s not groundbreaking or anything, but I’d argue she did this red carpet trend best last night.

Kerry Washington - In a sea of nude lips, it was unusually exciting to spot a bold lip at this year’s Oscars. Kerry Washington picked up on the purple of her dress with a deep berry colour that had just the right amount of vamp.

Olivia Wilde - And that is how you do a cat eye! Makeup artist Melanie Inglessis created the classic French look for Revlon brand ambassador Olivia Wilde. The sharp liner was accented with lots of lashes and a nude lipstick from the Revlon by Marchesa Red Carpet Collection.

Lupita Nyong’o - I am not ashamed to admit that I’m not a supporter of this headband situation. However, let’s ignore that little pesky detail and focus on her makeup: expertly shaped brows, a flushed cheek, and a hit of colour on the lips made for a very youthful look that let her natural beauty shine through. Lezzz be serious: she’s stunning; she doesn’t need a lot of dressing up.

Emma Watson - The hair was upsetting-ly messy to some, but I maintain the position that it made sense with her dress (which I loved). Her brows always look crazy good and the Oscars were no exception. Her skin looks luminous and the brick red lip is a great contrast to the slate grey and black gown.

Angelina Jolie - I didn’t like her gown, and I’m not much of a Saint Angelina supporter on the day to day, but from the neck up I was obsessed with her Oscars look. Her hair always looks so damn shiny, it kind of makes me hate her…but we all know it’s just cuz I’m jealous. The real star here are her eyes: check out those false lashes! I need to know what they are and where they’re from so I can get some for my next trip to Vegas.

Whose beauty were you diggin’ at the Oscars this year? Charlize always looks flawless, J Law didn’t really thrill me, Naomi’s hair was a bit off, and Cate of course looked radiant, too.

Much love, Madison Blake

Honourable mention of course must go to Liza Minnelli and her blue streak.
